The social determinants of young people's mental health

Briefing paper
15 Jun 2015

A briefing paper for providers, policy-makers, commissioners and researchers summarising our research on the links between mental health, legal problems, inequality and youth.

This research summarises the links between mental health, ‘everyday’ social welfare legal problems and inequality.

The study explores a range of themes and establishes:

  • That ‘everyday’ social welfare legal problems are key determinants of young people’s mental health:
  • The experience of legal problems is a key predictor of mental health problems;
  • That mental health problems are even more common where multiple legal problems are reported;
  • That mental health deteriorates as new legal problems emerge.
